Winter Watchlist
A mix of old and new, have and have not seen. Here are some movies I’m eyeing for loungey winter nights with charcuterie boards (or popcorn—because I just bought not one but two air poppers, one for Pittsburgh and one for Maryland!).
•••
Blade Runner
Every still from this film could be framed and hung on a wall.
Caught Stealing
The new Darren Aronofsky new film that very much doesn’t feel like a Darren Aronofsky film for the first few minutes, but just hang tight. It’s fun the whole way through.
Jay Kelly
Because I’m also always curious about what Noah Baumbach is up to.
Father Mother Sister Brother
And Jim Jarmusch.
Companion
Surprisingly fun. This movie had me wondering if I am a robot.
Bugonia
Fun, incredible acting, and for the ending.
Twin Peaks
Because sinking into a long, weird TV show worked so well last year with the X Files. It’s been about 15 years since I last watched it, and I miss that kitschy town and the dreamlike, neo-noir aesthetics and that David Lynch humor.
Blue Velvet
A companion piece to Twin Peaks.
The Matrix
I don’t know that I’ve ever watched all three at the same time, and winter seems like a good time to do that.
11.22.63
I ♥︎ James Franco and I like anything involving time travel.
Train Dreams
Back in time to a quieter, slower pace, with gorgeous cinematography, natural landscapes—all of which seem like the stuff of winter to me.
Hamnet
Even if you’re not a big Shakespeare fan, I think we can agree that a “biopic” on the man is intriguing.
The Carpenter’s Son
The story of Jesus being billed as a fantasy horror film was intriguing enough for me. With Nicolas Cage.
Die My Love
To see if Robert Pattinson can act.
The Chronology of Water
Kristen Stewart’s directorial debut, so I’m curious (Twihard here). Plus it’s about a writer—or, rather, a swimmer who channels her emotional pain through writing. Based on a memoir.
Avatar: Fire and Ash
Although honestly, Ryan Gosling on SNL is probably better.
Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die
Out in February, this one looks like a wild ride—and I’m particularly looking forward to it.
Project Hail Mary
Word on social media is the book (and audiobook) is unforgettable—the story of a astronaut (Ryan Gosling again) who has to save the world and all of humanity but is suffering from amnesia and doesn’t believe he’s an astronaut. Out March 20.

Some of your picks are my faves too! What about Poor Things, I loved that one? Blade Runner is going to be playing at the Lensic with a live orchestra. Hamnet, OMG, how I loved that movie, although it tore my heart out. Thank you Lauren xo
